Atkins diet
Atkins diet was devised by the late Dr. Robert Atkins. It follows the classic approach of a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. The theory behind Atkins diet is very simple: When carbohydrates are cut in the diet, the body will be forced to burn the fats to provide energy to meet the needs of the body. When fats are burned, the calorie count is very high and the body loses more weight. When carbohydrates are cut, blood sugar levels also remain relatively stable during the day. This discourages overeating.
The benefits of Atkins diet include loss of weight, maintenance of weight loss, achievement of good health and subsequent prevention of disease. The first two weeks of Atkins diet are called 'induction' period. During this phase, the dieters are not permitted to eat more than 20 grams of carbohydrates a day. Practically, this means that the diet includes meat, seafood, eggs, bacon and butter. The carbohydrate limit is met through trace amounts of green vegetables, cheese and sauces. The foods forbidden during this period include milk, fruits, cereals, bread vegetables such as potato, carrot and corn as they have high glycemic index.
After the first two weeks, the dieters will be allowed to add 5 grams more of carbohydrates. Normally, a diet with 40-90 grams of carbohydrates is allowed for dieters in the long term 'maintenance' phase. No doubt, this is a small figure compared to the recommendation of health experts and organizations. But it helps. Over the past one year, two studies have established the effectiveness of the Atkins diet over a standard low-fat, low-calorie diet. The results have been published in New England Journal of Medicine and Annals of Internal Medicine. The results were amazing as many symptoms of heart disease have lessened in patients following the Atkins Diet.
A study conducted by the North American Association for the Study of Obesity demonstrated that patients on Atkins diet had their normal diet cut by 1,000 calories during the Atkins plan. Additional research indicated that during the phase, Atkins dieters consumed only 1,500 calories per day, which is less than their previous intake. For vegetarians it is a bit difficult to follow Atkins diet as seeds, nuts, beans and many other vegetables are off the diet plan. With Atkins diet, people lose weight quickly, which is very motivating. The popularity of Atkins diet has made people talk about diet plans, which is an achievement in itself.
