At the beginning, Dexatrim formula comprised mostly of phenylpropanolamine. A study conducted in Yale University linked phenylpropanolamine to hemorrhagia in women and this resulted in the FDA issuing a warning. Then, Dexatrim was manufactured as an ephedrine-based product till the ban of ephedra in 2003. Though the brand name Dexatrim continues to be used, it is now made with many ephedra-free ingredients of choice.

Among the ingredients are blood sugar moderators, green tea, bitter orange. The advantages include the absence of phenylpropanolamine and ephedrine. One of the main formulas is totally free from caffeine and it contains Ginseng I for improving the flavor. But, the brand name Dexatrim has negative reputation based on the formula's background.
