Hoodia gordonii

Hoodia gordonii, also referred to as Hoodia, Hoodia cactus and South African desert cactus, is an African plant from the milk weed i.e. Asclepiadaceae family. Hoodoba is the brand under which this 'stone-age wonder plant' is marketed as a weight loss supplement. It claims that Hoodia restrains appetite and increases energy. The active ingredient in the plant is a combination of molecules referred to as P57. According to FDA, the Hoodia supplement is reasonably safe for grown ups as a weight loss aid but mentions that children under 18 years of age and pregnant and lactating women should not use this product.

There are different Hoodia gordonii-based products. Hoodoba Pure contains Hoodia gordonii in 400 mg or 750 mg strengths, Hoodoba Hi-Potency Elixir contains 500 mg of Hoodia gordonii and no other ingredients. Hoodoba Plus has a formula of Hoodia with cellulose and silica. Other products include Hoodoba Fortified Proprietary Blend with Certified Pure African Hoodia of 990 mg. Some of the trials with the active ingredient produced positive results and the FDA also states that Hoodia gordonii is reasonably safe. According to Hoodia Web site, it might take about fifteen days for the supplement to have its effect and begin controlling appetite. For some people there may not be much of change in their appetite.

It must be remembered that appetite control may or may not result in sustained weight loss. For that to happen on a long-term basis, a considerable change in lifestyle is essential. Hoodia is available in capsule, liquid and tea forms through health food stores, Internet and also television. Hoodia grows as green upright stems in clusters. It takes about 5 years for the pale purple colored Hoodia flowers to appear and the cactus to be harvested. Though there are about 20 types of Hoodia, only Hoodia gordonii is thought to contain the natural hunger suppressant.

It is interesting to learn that though Hoodia turned into a commercial appetite suppressant only recently, the San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert have been using it for a long time to reduce hunger and thirst during their nomadic trips. Anthropologists in 1937 noticed that the Bushmen used Hoodia to control appetite. It was only in 1963 that South Africa's national laboratory started studying Hoodia. The South African and British scientists isolated the active component in Hoodia and named it P57. They obtained patent in 1995 and licensed it to Phytopharm of Britain who sold it to Pfizer in 1998 and the company returned the rights. Now, Unilever obtained the global rights and is expected to make its first product available before 2007.
