Low Protein Diet
Protein is very essential for a healthy body. Protein metabolism by liver and the subsequent digestion results in the formation of urea as a waste product. If the liver is not healthy, it affects food metabolism. The kidneys are responsible for the excretion of urea. If they are not functioning well or if the levels of protein are continually high in the diet, urea levels go up in the bloodstream and this results in loss of appetite and fatigue. A Low Protein Diet will reduce the strain on the kidneys and the liver.
It is generally noticed that serious liver and kidney disorders make it necessary to restrict salt or sodium intake owing to high blood pressure or fluid retention. Salt is the primary source of sodium in the diet. Hence, its use has to be curtailed, in addition to other food items with high sodium content. This is another significant feature of the Low Protein Diet. A healthy person requires 40-60 grams of protein per day. But, people in affluent societies generally consume much more than that.
A Low Protein Diet is one that limits protein content to the least essential level. For body requirements, some of each type of protein should be consumed from the two primary sources, animal products and vegetable products. Animal products include fish, eggs, poultry, dairy products and meat. This protein is referred to as complete protein. Vegetable products include rice, bread, pasta, cereals and dried beans, which are referred to as incomplete proteins. To achieve Low Protein Diet, less of the protein foods may be consumed while increasing the non-protein food content. For example, in sandwiches, thinly sliced meats may be used and items such as lettuce, cucumber, chopped celery, parsley or apple may be added.
As part of Low Protein Diet, in soups, low protein foods such as milk substitutes for cream soups or rice or pasta may be used for filling and reducing the protein quantity. Vegetables and grains may be made the main dish and meat may be treated as side dish. Small pieces of meat should be replaced by vegetables in kebabs. Another way of achieving Low Protein Diet is using vegetables in fried rice In the place of meat or shrimp. For salads, less of meat and egg may be used with more of fresh vegetables. Low Protein Diet results in reduction in calories. This can be compensated by vegetable oils such as cottonseed, soy, safflower or corn, candy and sweeteners such as hard candy or gum drops and canned fruits in heavy syrup.
A Low Protein Diet is ideal for those with kidney or liver disease, who are prescribed such diet. Otherwise, Low Protein Diet should be followed only under medical supervision.
