The Portfolio Diet
The Portfolio Diet is a product of research from a Canadian team, which revealed that soy is capable of playing a decisive role in reducing cholesterol levels. The team selected 25 volunteers and placed them on The Portfolio Diet for one month. It was found that at the end of the period, the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) went down by 35 per cent. It is an established fact that high LDL levels increase the risk of heart disease. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is the factor that reduces the risk of heart disease. Among the volunteers, the level of HDL was not affected and remained steady. Among those who were placed on a regular diet, the level of LDL fell by 12 percent.
The breakfast in Portfolio Diet consists of oat bran, fruit and soy milk. Lunch comprises vegetarian chili, oat bran bread and tomato. Dinner is made up of soy burger, vegetarian curry, eggplant, northern beans, cauliflower, okra, barley, red peppers and onions. The volunteers also had Metamucil 3 times per day from psyllium for soluble fiber. When we take a look at the sample diet, we find that the foods selected such as soy, plant sterol and almonds have been found to be beneficial to the human system.
In addition, the foods have very low fat, mostly vegetarian with plenty of fiber in oats, legumes, okra and Metamucil. And the food is very tasty. The Portfolio Diet was so tasty that researchers reported that most of the volunteers have continued with the diet after the research was completed. For those who need to lower their cholesterol levels, this diet is worth taking a look at. Though there are medications that reduce the level of cholesterol. Medicines are always associated with risks. In this regard, The Portfolio Diet appears to be a very safe.
There are four kinds of foods in The Portfolio Diet recipe. It substitutes soy-based foods for meat and soy milk as a dairy substitute. The Portfolio Diet includes as much sticky fiber in the food as possible. It replaces butter and margarine with plant sterol- added margarine. The Portfolio Diet also includes nuts. The participants also consumed a handful of almonds every day. The Almond Board of California also supports The Portfolio Diet research and offers Portfolio Diet recipes on its Web site. On all counts The Portfolio Diet seems to be useful and safe.
