Subway Diet
Jared Fogle has been recommending the Subway Diet all over the billboards and through TV ads. The diet promises that by eating two sandwiches a day, a dieter can shed his weight, just as he did. He lost more than 245 pounds over a period of one year and he was able to achieve that with minimum exercise. People on Subway Diet begin the day with coffee. During lunch time, the dieter has a 6 inch Subway turkey sub along with baked potato chips. The sub has to be from the low fat menu. For dinner, the dieter may have a twelve-inch vegetable sub, chips and a diet coke. This is the diet for those who intend to follow this diet. Looking at what is involved, the Subway Diet is not difficult to follow.
The Subway Diet is more of a personal success story than a specific manner of losing weight. People choose different paths to lose weight and this approach may not work for all those who adopt it. When he began the Subway Diet with a weight of around 300 pounds, Jared's body needed a substantial number of calories to maintain its weight. By causing a prolonged calorie deficit over a long time, he managed to lose weight. This principle may not work for everyone and has nothing to do with Subway sandwiches in any manner. Reduction of caloric intake and regular exercise would be beneficial to anyone who wants to lose weight.
The Subway Diet is more of a subtle advertising program, featuring Jared Fogle. According to Subway, he did not take up any exercise. Here again, the basic principle is that anyone who reduces caloric intake on a regular basis is going to lose weight, whatever the choice of food may be. According to Renee Curran, a nutritionist at the University of Michigan, Jared lost weight just because he was consuming fewer calories, about 1000 calories, a day. His diet consisted of no cheese, oil or mayonnaise. After he dropped about 100 pounds, he began walking exercise which led to further loss of weight.
The problem with Subway Diet approach is that it is too narrow to focus on for long term. It does not advocate a balanced approach to nutrition that is essential for normal body functions, once the dieter achieves his weight loss goal. Hence, it is considered more of a marketing exercise than a useful method to lose weight and an attempt to make people believe that Subway sandwiches are a healthier option than other fast foods.
